Columbarium Addition - Montevideo, Uruguay
This project was was an addition to a columbarium in Montevideo, Uruguay originally designed by Nelson Bayardo. A columbarium is an above ground cemetery and is common in many South American nations. My addition is designed to be built into the hill side eventually breaking threw the side of the existing columbarium, connecting the two in a central courtyard. The addition spawns from a black onyx wall that runs throughout the site. At its beginning the wall is only a few feet high providing seating for pedestrians passing by, but as the wall moves south the land falls away and the wall becomes more exposed. Eventually reaching a height of 18 feet, the wall folds over itself and creates a roof from which the graves are hung. The building is completely open, having nothing on the floor because all of the graves are hung from the roof. This project was for an undergraduate studio in which all of the work was done free hand. Learning to make drawings, collages, and models of final presentation using free hand was a challenging task but one that has taught me to freely design without the being bound by the limitations of the computer.
