New Bedford Wind Energy Research Facility
This project was a CPC design project done in partnership with the town of New Bedford, MA building office. The projects goal was to combine a community center for the people of New Bedford with a research testing facility for Cape Wind. The project forced integration between not only local and global communities but also through two very different program requirements. My final design was a facility that was comprised of two parts; one was a recreational area which included a pool and gym as well as a wing of classrooms and labs for children and young adults to come to and learn about the powers of wind energy . The second was a large glass cube research lab and wind tunnel that were centrally located so all of the student classrooms and labs could look in and see the work going on in the lab or wind tunnel. The form of the facility is derived from the idea of an eye watching over the New Bedford harbor symbolizing safe travel for sailors much like the traditional light house.
